- Subject: Features of BBSERV.EXE (c) F.M. Crosby, W1NPR as of 03/12/92
-
- 1. Runs in conjunction with The AA4RE Bulletin Board V2.11 & above by
- AA4RE, H. Roy Engehausen.(c) 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992
- 2. Runs at regular intervals from wakeup.bb or manually when desired. The
- server runs outside of the BBS program in a DOS shell with little
- danger of harmful crashes to "BB" using the new server command in V2.12
- 3. Setup uses a configuration file ( BBSERV.CFG) which provides the paths,
- owners & subjects of the directories used by BBcreate.exe, which is a menu
- driven setup program, this creates BBserv.set used by BBserv.exe.
- All BBSERV files may be put in their own directory or pathed to using
- paths designated in parms.bb. A single parameter text file is created
- in your "BB" default directory. Import files will appear there also.
- 4. You may designate one additional server name for the messages to be
- addressed to in addition to BBSERV ( this feature obsolete in this Ver.)
- 5. You may designate up to 50 separate databases which may be either some
- of your regular BBS file directories or entirely separate ones. You may
- path these in any way desired using the standard parms.bb format.
- This allows you to use your existing data and add additional data which
- you may select the way users may access it.
- 6. Any database may be assigned a remote "OWNER" or editor of this section
- of the system. He & he alone may place, remove, replace/edit files in
- this section & may send bulletins, updates, new files, indexes & etc.
- to the registered users of his section using messages created from a
- xxxx.cc type distribution file generated by the server.
- 7. Users may use most of the FILE commands that are available in the command
- line of the BBS's they are used to. Several special commands for users
- are also available in addition to the commands used by the servers in
- their file updating etc. these are explained in the (I)nfo command from
- the server. Up to date directory & wildcard searches are available.
- Batch requests may be provided in two ways.
- 9. Filesize and the type of files that may be requested are contolled by the
- server so you may open up any portion of your computer disks for use
- without fear that users might download command.com, executable files
- or copyrighted programs. Filesize limit is set by the sysop.
- If directory requests result in too large a file BBserv will send INDEX
- 10.BBSERV in conjuntion with AA4RE's new ACTION.BB's control over message
- routing etc. makes a great combination in almost complete automation of
- most aspects of BBSing.
- 11.Requests for files that are broken into small pieces will be all sent
- in a batch type operation, this may be done at off peak times.
- 12.Subject? DU will return a list of up to the first 500 registered users.
- 13 Subject? DU Callsign will return the pertinent registration data for
- this user.
- 14.BBSERV is being developed in conjunction with a W0RLI BBS server, DBSERV
- by Tom Ringate K0ZXF to provide automated shadow features & compatible
- command structure for both servers.
- 15. All of these functions are performed at the server by commands sent in
- the Subject portion of a message to BBSERV@BBScall
- 16. BBserv checks for available memory before running and if it isn't enough
- will abort & not crash "BB"
- 17. Automatic Import of messages created by BBserv and a " NO OP " [Q]
- option in REBBS versions 2.1W + allow very flexible server operation with
- little interference with the standard BBS when there is no work to do.
